The Sunshine Solution is the projected product of an assessment and accountability task force with members from around the (Sunshine) State of Florida.
It is an effort to develop a system of accountability that is reasonable. Rather than worrying about fixing the blame, we are developing a solution.
From its very founding in January of 2014, the Florida Coalition of School Board Members held accountability and assessment as one of its five core values.
"Balance of Accountability & Reasonableness in Assessments
FCSBM believes in local control of education decisions with reasonable state oversight and accountability. Assessments should be evidence-based, occasional, and beneficial to students, not used to punish them. Accountability encourages excellence, but should not be so high stakes as to encourage "teaching to the test". Classroom learning time must be regarded as precious, and the time and resources sacrificed for testing must be carefully and transparently considered." - FCSBM Core Values
The origin of the task force was two School Board Members working independently of one another in districts across the state from one another and then finding that the Seminole County School District had put forth a similar solution which quickly became known as the "Seminole Solution'.
In short order, the idea spread throughout the state and found a home within the Florida Coalition of School Board Members who arranged for a virtual round table.
